Celie's Epic Adventurous Quest for sexual arousal - Josh McWain
In The Color Purple, the book brings up many taboo considered topics that people don’t normally bring up. One of the most controversial and thought provoking being sexuality and how we identify our self sexualities. There are several occurrences in the novel where Celie gets sexual arousal, but never when having sexual interaction with men yet. But only with Sug rn which gives the indication that she is as of right now in the beginning of the novel a lesbian. Others argue that she is straight but she just hasn’t had the chance to experience it with a man that hasn’t discriminated against her. But that statement is a closed mind interpretation because it closes out any chance that Celie could be lesbain which isn’t fair to say thus far. Celie expresses her arousal for Sug so much she actually masterbates to her which shows a strong sexual attraction, specifically the anatomy of a women since that is what Sug is. Later in the novel there may be occurrences when Celie comes to a more concrete stance of her sexuality but until then the only justified answer is that she is a lesbian. Which also could help spread homosexual awareness and also feminist power by engraving the beauty of women into the readers head. Especially when compared to the male characters in the book so far which all have been social puppets of domestic and mental abuse.
