The relationship that is present between Celie and Shug demonstrates the first time in which Celie feels any sort of attraction or love towards another person. This one person so happens to be a women, which brings up the question of Celie's feelings towards Shug. Celie's actions and feelings about Shug are not that of necessarily Celie as a lesbian, but rather Shug allows Celie to get out her emotionless state of being. Celie's emotionless state is largely caused by the men in her life and her childhood experiences.
Shug and Celie share a relationship that is more than just sex. Shug reveals to Celie what sex is and how to enjoy it. Shug describes and shows Celie how to enjoy sex and for this fact is why Celie seems so attracted to Shug. To Celie, her relationship with Shug is important because Shug makes her
feel important. She gives Celie a sense of identity and also makes her
feel sexually, physically, and emotionally more comfortable. Shug helps
Celie get out of her emotionless state.
