Chaper 1 Motifs
The passage in the novel discusses Juan promising his mother he would find his father, Pedro Paramo, after her death. A motif in this passage would be the unknown and death because Juan’s mother is dying and is leaving him such vague information. It characterizes Juan and Pedro because the reader is aware that Pedro did something bad to them and that Juan isn’t reliable due to the fact that he was not going to keep his promise to his mother. Personification is seen further in the chapter as well, saying his head began to swim in dreams. The tone of this passage is a bit revengeful and leaves the reader feeling uncertain and curious about “who is Pedro Paramo?” and “what did he do?”

Interesting. How does the concept of "the unknown" play out in the rest of the novel.
