The Only Survivor

This passage explains the reason for why Juan is doing what he is doing (He wants to find his father). Throughout the chapter the tone seems detached and uncaring, almost as if Juan doesn't care what the end result is. Most likely, because he is trying to fulfill an empty promises. The empty promise being for him to find his father. The interesting thing about this, is that the promise is his mother's last wish, and her last wish is for Pedro Paramo to pay. This is important, because it is juxtaposed against pop culture, because (generally) people are at peace in the face of death. This causes his Mom to be different, which she is as she is the only one in the book not to go to Hell or purgatory.

  1. Try to be more specific. Which words tell you that the tone is one of detachment, for example? Be sure to incorporate some direct quotes (even one of two words).
