The way Pedro Paramo is introduced for the first time is
quite interesting. The reader is introduced to him only as the father of our
main character, Juan Preciado. There is no good or bad connotation associated
with his name yet. However, two lines later, Juan’s mother tells him to, “Make
him pay, son,” (Rulfo 1). This associates Pedro Paramo with negative feelings.
Even
after hearing negative things about him, Juan still goes to Comala. He fill himself
with a false hope of a life with his father, even though he knows that Pedro is
a bad guy who took advantage of his mother. This could be a statement that the
author, Juan Rulfo, could be trying to make about human nature. We tend to fill
ourselves with hope, even in the most hopeless circumstances, only to be
crushed in the end.
A little more? Perhaps take some time to focus on additional words and their connotations?
