This passage takes place at Juan's mother's death bed were his mom gives him a few thought provoking ideas. these ideas cause Juan's "head began to swim with dreams and imagination took flight" meaning the whole book is part of Juan's imagination. Even if the author didn't intend for the book to be a dream it doesn't matter. This idea can change the meaning and significance of the text in a valid way. But how does it change? I think that the possibility of the book being in Juan's imagination makes the whole city/ world a much smaller but still all the more meaningful idea. Conveying the idea that the world and , the already subliminal town, Comala as small and insignificant creates the idea that no matter how much the dead people in Comala want to be saved and go to heaven and not amounting to anything outside of the town is similar to the idea ,that goes with the motif of religion, that god looks at the world creates a story in a random and unpredictable way that every event such as evolution creation the coming and passing of mankind are all events in gods mind that are more than significant to people on earth but seen as trivial to god who is portrayed as Juan. When God also died because gods thoughts were so powerful that they were created and the creation drifted away from god causing his death/ sleep.
Much better!
