Stevens is more than meets the eye

"Irritating as Miss Kenton's behaviour was, I could not afford to give it much thought, for by then the first of the guests had arrived"(Ishiguro 80)

This quote has revealed much about the true character Stevens really is. For example, Stevens uses the word "irritating"; this implies that Stevens does have a sense of feeling and reaction to others behaviors. Throughout the novel, Stevens has not truly been affected by others actions to the point of him becoming irritated by that person. This shows how "robotic" and "non-human" Stevens is. However, he uses the word irritating towards Ms. Kenton to imply a emotion, a feeling towards another. Also, Stevens mentions how he "couldn't afford to give it much thought", which reveals how Stevens is very quick to feel and move on from such aspects of himself that don't make him a "great butler". Stevens doesn't confide in his emotions because of how they will affect his work as a butler therefore identifying why Stevens presents himself as unfeeling or emotionless throughout the novel. In Conclusion, Stevens isn't as much of a hard head as we (the reader) thought him to be. He is just very emo-like of his emotions.
