The War on Social Classes
Throughout Persepolis, the audience sees differences between the social classes. Satrapi views these differences as horrible with her mention of: being a prophet, the description of Ashraf Darvishian's childhood, and how Mehri couldn't se her lover anymore. First, at the beginning of the novel Satrapi explains that she wants to be a prophet for these three reasons: because her maid didn't eat with the family, because her father had a Cadillac, and because her grandmother's knees always ached. Satrapi gives us these reasons because she wants to show the readers how different people alive in Iran at the time. I am not saying Satrapi was rich but she was in the middle class which we can see with the Cadillac and the maid. The second difference is when Ashraf Darvishian's signing came up. In the novel it mentions, that "he told sad but true stories: Reza becoming a porter at the age of ten."(33). not everyone got what they wanted at the time, the kids had to work to get the things they needed. it shows us not everyone could afford a well lived lifestyle. This also illustrates that people were not equal. The third difference is when Mehri becomes in love with the neighbor's son. She can't love him because she was a maid and his family didn't want to be seen differently because of her status. Her status would have undermined their status. All in all,we can see the true differences between the social statuses in Iran.
