Persepolis Theme
One of the main themes in the first book of Persepolis is the idea of running and hiding from what you are fighting for and what you believe in. The first example is on page 5 when Marjane's mom dyes her hair blonde and wear glasses. Though she still believes in what she is fighting for she has to run and hide from it to protect her own life. A picture of her was taken when she was at a protest and she was afraid she would be found and executed. Another example is on page 66 when Marjane and her family discover Siamak and his family traveled across the border hidden in a flock of sheep because they too were afraid for their lives. Siamaks sister was executed in front of their house because he was a rebel and his family then feared for their safety so they fled from their cause. A final example is when Marjane leaves the country on page 152 and goes to the US. Her parents fear for her safety and also fear they will so be killed. They send her away from their cause because they believe her safety is more important than the cause they fight for. There are many examples in Persepolis of people fleeing their cause because they fear for their life and/or their safety
