Go with the flow

Adam Hummel

The theme of the first book of Persepolis:

The action of rebelling against society will initiate fearsome situations, which in all reality is inevitable.

Examples in the book would include when Persepolis's parents were attempting to 'smuggle' pop-culture posters back in Iran, when Persepolis was making fun of her school's rituals, and finally when Persepolis was wearing her pop-culture clothing to go out shopping. The fates of the three situations respectively were: being under arrest, expulsion, and going with strangers who would teach Persepolis to be a respectable Iranian girl. Lesson learned, Persepolis's parents managed to smuggle the posters and items, Persepolis was expelled yet made it into another school, and Persepolis avoided having to go with those women. In the senses their fates, the situations they were put in were inevitable is the fact that (respectively): Security would have searched items and baggage for 'illegal
' items anyway; one may not always know when what they could be 'smuggling' is illegal (their society was prone to ridiculous accusations), if a child were to enjoy themselves, be children; it would have been considered a 'threat' to Iranian traditions, and finally those strangers/women would have sought out youth to 'correct' anyway; since in society that is one of the only roles they had played.

So i suppose a final message would be: go with the flow, or be prepared for people acting out at you.
