It is always quiet before a disaster.

The passage, “Wrapped in a horse blanket… It was dark and light at the same time”, was when Anton was in the jail cell with the communist lady. The officers decided to take him Ortskommandantur and then back to his parents. That night there was an unbreakable silence, which not even the sound of the motorcycle motor could disrupt. Usually before a major disaster, everything is extremely quiet and peaceful. This passage suggests that there will be a terrible crisis that is bound to happen soon. Also, the quote, “It was dark and light at the same time” demonstrates how the present occurrences are identical with the weather conditions. The Nazis were the darkness and the people who tried to help the Germans were the light. This passage conveys an ultimate message that there is always light in every dark, and vice versa; and also that that a disaster is going to happen.

  1. “It was dark and light at the same time” (This is a paradox). "This passage suggests that there will be a terrible crisis that is bound to happen soon." (Foreshadowing?)
