Pedro Paramo Chapter One Interpretation

In this passage, the book has just started with saying "I came to Comala".  The main character’s mother has just passed away and told her son to go to Comala, her birthplace.  Promising to his mother on her deathbed, the main character has now traveled to Comala in search of his father Pedro Paramo.  The passage is from the main character's point of view and the story seems to be centered around his father, Pedro.  The word "promise" is repeated multiple times and gives reason to why Juan would travel to this place in search of a man he has never known before. The tone of the chapter is very dark and murky with the author mentioning death. The chapter also ends with the words "I had come to Comala" which shows the chapter beginning and ending with the same thought. This repetition gives hint that this town Comala will have great impact on the main character.
