Close Reading on Chapter 1 (Aleena)

This chapter has motifs of desperation and wanting for revenge. In the quote, "At the time all I could do was tell her I would do what she asked, from promising so often I kept repeating the promise even after I had pulled my hands free of her death grip", you can feel the mother's desperation for her son to get revenge on the man who shattered her heart and left her all alone. Also, Juan seems to be going back and forth from not wanting to go to Comala and wanting to go. He is indecisive on whether he wants to relive his mother's past or not. But in the end he decides to go because he is super curious as to what his father is like.
