The Flyest Close Read of the First Chapter of Pedro Paramo You Have Ever Read in Your Life (Also known as: The Importance of Language to Pedro Paramo and Its Readers)

Chapter one uses repetition and imagery to get a certain point across. The idea of going to
Comala was repeated and this showed the importance of this journey to the entire novel. The imagery of death creates a dark tone that enforces the grave importance of the journey. Also, the language used enforced this idea and tone. The syntax and usage of the word 'I' explains Juan's purpose in his journey to Comala. It showed the self-importance with the over usage of the word 'I' and this explained not only why the trek to Comala would be important to Juan's mother but also important to himself. The overall chapter serves to connect Juan to the reader by giving him a humanizing backstory, making the reader more invested in the coming story. This first chapter did many important things that are significant to our understanding and connection to the rest of the novel.

  1. Combine those first two sentences so that you explicitly state what the point is that he's trying to get across.

  2. One more thought: read through your paragraph after finishing it. Take some of the repeated words (like "importance" and find synonyms so that your prose is more varied.
