The first page of Pedro Paramo
starts off with Juan explaining why he is going to Comala. He explains a lot
about the promise to his mother to go find his father. The language on this
page is really strait forward. It has limited figurative language and imagery.
This juxtaposes with the novel because the novel is anything but strait
forward. The first page shows Juan’s memory of making the promise to his mother
and how he felt. Towards the end of the page is when there is some more
figurative language involved. “But before I knew it my head began to swim with
dreams and my imagination took filght” (Rulfo 30). This quote personifies his
thoughts and dreams and it is also very juxtapositional between flight and
water. This quote demonstrates the jumbled thoughts of Juan and it also relates
to the Jumble thought and writing of the author further in the book.
Itzel,
ReplyDeleteYou noted that this first chapter is very straightforward, in contrast with the rest of the novel. Why is this significant, or what is the function/effect of this contrast?
