Chapter One of Pedro Peramo through the lens of Juan analysis reference summary blog
In Chapter 1, Pedro Peramo tells the reader why he is going to Comala. He's going because he told his mother he promised he would go, but that's not the only reason why. In the text, Rulfo writes "I never meant to keep my promise. But before I knew it my head began to swim with dreams and my imagination took flight. Little by little I began to build a world around a hope centered on the man called Pedro Peramo" (Rulfo 3). This tell us that Juan really wants to meet Pedro Peramo, not just because of the promise, but because for more selfish reasons. He has all these great hops and expectations for this man called Pedro Peramo, but as we soon find out he is disappointed because Pedro is notoriously known as a not so good person and he is dead. But out of the text I think this shows a part of human nature, hope. Hope is intangible but everywhere and is either created from uncertainty or desperation. People are scared of not knowing so they create hope. In this case for Juan, it is both. He is both uncertain and desperate of this man he doesn't know, yet he has all this hope for him thinking he's gonna be this great person. Everyone has hope somewhere whether religous or not. So yeah.
